Miss
Mickey Champion, an enduring talent, a local legend, a petite powerhouse
with a distinct sensuality and sense of humor. If you have ever
seen her perform it is hard to forget and equally hard to describe.
In the old school style of the Jazz and Blues greats Mickey's shows
are often done without a microphone at all. Her vocal projection
is matched by her lively interactions with her audiences. Mickey's
unique sense of style brings a spirited diversity to the powerful
voice that has been her trademark for so many years.
Born in Lake Charles Louisiana and now living in the Crenshaw District
of Los Angeles she has been compared to Little Ester Phillips, Dinah
Washington, Big Mama Thornton and Ethel Waters. Throughout her
career
Mickey has performed with and opened for many legendary contemporaries
including; Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Billy Holliday, Ike and
Tina Turner, Johnny Adams, Ruth Brown Jackie Wilson, Johnny Otis,
Albert King and Roy Milton.
A
well-kept secret for many years Mickey was recently the subject
of a documentary Produced by Paul Vic and Oletha Rodgers entitled
"Champions Blues". Performing live shows up to five days
a week in both upscale hotels and in the authentic Blues haunts
of South Central, Mickey continues to develop as an artist and performer.
This current body of work includes several original songs written
specially for Mickey by Lieber and Stoller and other local Grammy
winning songwriters. Mickey herself wrote, "I'm a woman".
Guest appearances by some of L.A.'s best studio and touring musicians
include the guitar work of Grammy Award winning Blues artist "Keb
Mo" as well as former and current members of The Eagles, Rod
Stewart, Stevie Wonder and Carol King bands.
In an era where sometimes the heart and soul of good music seems
to exist only in the past, Mickey Champion reminds us that inspiration
never dies and that much of the beauty and tradition of yesterday
is still here for us to enjoy. Take the time to listen and enjoy
something too unique to find just anywhere.
